November Newsletter 2020

Dear Families,

Thank you for those who helped out and participated in our Dia De Los Muertos and Halloween activities in October. We had a fabulous time together!

November's focus is on "Gratitude and Giving" as we celebrate Thanksgiving and Martinmas this month. The festivities of Martinmas include holding a lantern walk. If you're unfamiliar with this festival there are some archives of this celebration as in years past, the story of Martinmas has been celebrated as part of Kristkindlmart at "This is the Place Park" with several children and school districts participating in the lantern walk and watching the enactment of the story of St. Martin.

We had earlier school plans to have families join in our lantern walk festivities and to hold this outside at a park. It is a beautiful experience being together in family units, singing songs, and seeing the reflecting lights from the lantern give light to the dark night while observing the stars sparking overhead.

However, as Utah County is currently in a high level of cases due to the pandemic, we will be holding activities with individual classes but hope to include families next year. We look forward to children making their own lanterns, hearing the story of St. Martin, learning lantern walk songs, and participating in a lantern walk at the school with their class.

In addition, due to the current trend and increase in COVID-19 cases, we will be holding digital parent-teacher conferences via Zoom rather than having them in person this month.  The available times are 3-8 pm on November 23-24. Teachers will be sending out an invitation to sign up for a specific time for parent teacher conferences via Sign-up Genius and they will share their Zoom link with you.

If you have a need to meet with your child's teacher in person, please reach out to your child's teacher to schedule your time on Friday, November 20th, as that is our designated day for in-person one on one appointments.

Our picture day was a great success. We have an opportunity to have retakes on November 19th if desired, or to get them taken if your child was absent.

Students will not be attending school November 25-30th. Monday, the 30th, is a teacher professional development day where teachers will be here for training, but school children will not attend school that day.  Please see the calendar below.

Thank you for your continued support of our school. We love working with you and your children!

Warmly,

Martinmas - Themes of Giving & Gratitude

This month our focus is on Gratitude and Giving.  Thanksgiving is celebrated in November in which we are able to express gratitude for the many blessings that we have. In addition, in Waldorf Schools, we tell the story of St. Martin, who as a young soldier passed under an archway of the city of Amiens and discovered a poor beggar huddled there.

The man was poorly clothed and shivering with cold. On seeing him, the young Martin took his red cape from his own shoulders, tore the garment in half, and covered the suffering man to warm him. The following night, Martin had a dream in which he saw an angel wearing this same piece of his cape. The experience confirmed in him his devotion to all mankind regardless of their station in life.

Martin left his life as a soldier and devoted his life to helping the poor and needy.  He became a patron saint and was known for his gentleness, his unassuming nature, and his ability to bring warmth and light to those in need.

As we journey into the darkest time of the year, it is increasingly important for each of us to kindle warmth and light in our hearts.  The story of St. Martin and his cloak can remind us to share with those in need and work on our giving natures.

The gently glowing lanterns of Martinmas will soon give way to the candles of the advent spiral as we draw nearer to the Solstice, showing how our inner light may shine ever brighter contrasting the dark and cold. We look forward to the time when we celebrate our Festival of Light in December.
